Are You A Huckleberry?
Posted on
There's a great scene in the film Tombstone in which Doc Holiday (played by Val Kilmer) tells Johnny Ringo, "I'll be your Huckleberry". For a long time, I had thought that phrase meant: "I'm the man for the job, and I'm here to stand-up for my friends through thick and thin".
While it can and does carry that meaning (see "Huckleberry Finn" too), it also has another explanation. Thanks to the "Wildman" (who pointed out the historical reference), and a little sleuthing on that thing they call the Internet, I discovered:
In the 19th Century, the handles on a coffin were called "Huckles" and the person who carried the casket at a funeral was called a "Hucklebearer". So in that famous scene in Tombstone, perhaps what Doc Holiday was really saying to Johnny Ringo was, "I'll be your Hucklebearer". Basically, he was saying that after the gun fight was over he would, "be the one to carry you to your grave".
That's a heavy concept for a Tshirt collection. In any case, this collection of handcrafted type was inspired by the aforementioned concept, and enlightened by further context. Here's to hoping the rest of your week is illuminating. Cheers!
