Out of Many, One (OMO)
“The one is made up of all things, and all things issue from the one.” – Heraclitus of Ephesus
Perhaps it was Heraclitus, but more than likely it was inspiration gleamed from a 1700's English publication called Gentlemen's Magazine that influenced America’s first graphic designer, Eugéne Pierre du Simitiére (EPD) when he submitted his phrase for a "Great Seal" for our newly formed nation. It took years for EPD’s suggested motto, “E Pluribus Unum (from many, one) and design (American Bald Eagle clutching thirteen arrows) to be adopted as the national motto by Congress.
EPD is widely credited with “archiving” the American Revolution through his first person sketches of events. His extensive collection of pamphlets and hand-bills created at the time became the first American National History museum. EPD, who was, “a very curious man” according to John Adams, died at 47. “It can truly be said that he would rather collect than eat, for the generally accepted cause of his death was starvation,” Joel J. Oroz.
This collection is inspired by EPDs persistence and legacy as "America's first graphic designer". His motto lives on, and is as relevant today as it was 246 years ago.
