The catcher in Baseball is the second most important person on the field. The catcher, position number two on your scoring sheet, has the ball in his hand as much as the pitcher, number one on your scoring sheet.

A good catcher takes a team to the next level. A great catcher takes a good team to a title.

The Origins of Borrador de Beisball

At a tournament this spring, I caught the game's final outs before my game was going to start. I got lucky to watch a "strike 'em out - throw him out" play to end the game, and the whole place erupted with cheers (and groans). As the crowd passed, I saw a few Baseball Dads shaking their heads and commenting about the catcher.

Evidently, he had been a terror the entire game, catching runners who stole and erasing the other team's chances.

That led me down a wormhole to try and determine who was the best "Eraser" or "Borrador" of baseball. I immediately thought of Pudge Rodriquez, but the statisticians at Baseball Savant have no clear way to determine who was the best "eraser" of runners of all time.

Like most Baseball statistics, once you start digging, there are entire eras you have to filter out. In my mind, and the stats back it up, during his day in the sun, Pudge was the man. Javier Molina is the reigning man these days, but J.T. Realmuto is my favorite catcher. He's an ex-QB who can rake.
